1. Will I have to
talk about my problem?
No. Because P.S.H. is dealing with
the subconscious cause of the problem, true healing takes place at
the subconscious level. There is no need for the therapist
or the client to know the cause of the problem for healing
to take place. Playing detective in locating the cause of the
problem will usually inhibit the healing process. The therapist merely
acts as a facilitator in showing the client how to use the natural
healing abilities of his/her own mind.
P.S.H. therapists do not discuss
problems at a conscious level, or during therapy. The therapist
will only ask what difficulties you are experiencing in your life and in what
way you would like to be different.
2. Will I recall or relive painful or traumatic
experiences?
Recalling or reliving past painful
or traumatic experiences is entirely unnecessary in P.S.H. Therapy.
It is not the experience itself which is the cause of present
problems, but the subconscious emotional response to it. Healing
can take place without the client being "re-traumatised".
It is a gentle, non-invasive process.
4. Will I experience emotional catharsis?
Emotional catharsis is not necessary for
healing to take place. It is now understood that
the subconscious tries to protect or improve things for you, although
it often holds on to out-dated thoughts, feelings or behaviours,
which are the cause of current problems. If we try to bring
to conscious awareness memories that the subconscious-mind has
repressed, it will often bury the real "emotional cause"
even deeper. This is not conducive to effective therapy.
5. How do I identify a subconscious-mind
problem?
When a person is unable to change
unwanted feelings, responses or behaviours through conscious
will-power or effort, it is usually an indication of negative
subconscious emotion.
Negative subconscious-mind conflicts manifest
themselves in many ways. They can be revealed in simple areas,
such as how we deal with stress and anxiety.
Isn't it interesting how two
people in a similar situation can react so differently? One may
become a pillar of strength, while the other deteriorates both
physically and emotionally, no matter how hard they try to be otherwise.
P.S.H. can help people resolve their inner underlying subconscious
difficulties and restore a balance of health and happiness.
In his book "Emotional Healing",
the late Frank Wright, co-developer of P.S.H., lists four areas
to target in identifying subconscious-mind problems. If you answer
"yes" to any of the following questions, it is almost
certain that your current health problem is subconscious in origin.
i. Have I ever experienced at least one of the following symptoms?
- Nightmares or regular, uncomfortable dreams of any kind;
- Migraine-type headaches or any migraine-like symptoms; (no
organic cause)
- Panic attacks for no obvious reason;
- Phobias;
- Sexual difficulties which do not relate to the current state
of a relationship;
- Anorexia, bulimia or alcoholism;
- An emotionally difficult childhood.
ii. Are my symptoms either illogical or irrational?
It is irrational and illogical to feel depressed or anxious
without being able to relate it to anything of particular significance.
A lack of control over the following sorts of feelings is rarely
logical:
- Depression
- Low self-esteem
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Irrational emotional outbursts
iii. Do I have compulsive habits?
Do I have a habit which is working against my goals, and although
I try, I can't permanently control it. These include:
- Overeating;
- Smoking;
- Excessive drinking;
- Teeth-clenching, nail-biting, hair pulling, and other habits;
- Being a perfectionist, to the point where it affects your
happiness or the happiness of those around you;
- Workaholic behaviour, unbalanced life-style;
- Any nervous habits, eg foot jiggling, nail biting, finger
tapping, etc.
iv. Has my doctor been unable to find a cause for my symptoms?
Any physical ailment should be thoroughly checked
by a competent medical practitioner. If no cause
can be found, it is highly likely that the origin is subconscious:
- Hypertension
- Skin disorders of any kind
- Menstrual or hormonal problems of any kind
- Tension headaches
- Colitis or other intestinal problems
- Asthma or bronchial difficulties
- Cardiovascular problems
- Peptic ulcers
- Lower back pain

6. When was PSH developed?
The principles and philosophies of what is now known as P.S.H.
have been developed over a period of approximately 15 years.
Two independent practitioners, the late Frank Wright (author
of "Emotional Healing") and Greg Brice (principal of
I.C.S.T.R.(Qld) - International Centre for Subconscious-mind Training and
Research), were both working in the field of subconscious-mind
therapy. Working separately and unknown to each other, they developed
techniques that were very similar to each other, yet very different
to their contemporaries working within the field. Both therapists
had found that traditional methods of subconscious-mind therapy,
(dominated by hypnotherapy) were in many cases inadequate and
did not produce a high enough percentage of desired results.
Frank Wright and Greg Brice became aware of each others
work in 1988 and collaborated to eventually define the P.S.H. model
of therapy.
7. What is ASTA?
The Australasian Subconscious-mind Therapists Association
(ASTA) is the professional organisation that monitors the standards
of P.S.H. Therapy being offered to the community, and also provides
opportunities for ongoing professional development for its members.
Ensure your therapist has attained the appropriate qualifications
from an ASTA accredited school and is a member of ASTA.
8. How do I make an appointment?
If you live within the Sydney metropolitan area, contact Deborah
Lhota or David Ifield at the P.S.H. Therapy Centre on (02) 9456 5599 (Australia) or email
The PSH Centre.
To locate a reputable therapist outside of the Sydney metropolitan
area, contact Greg Brice at the International Centre for Subconscious-mind
Training and Research (I.C.S.T.R.(Qld)) on (07) 3378 5336 or see the list of qualified registered P.S.H. therapists on www.psh.org.au.
